“Ashi-atsu” is a Japanese word meaning “foot pressure.” It first emerged as a therapeutic healing art in the Far East thousands of years ago. The form of Ashiatsu found at Artemis is derived from these ancient techniques, and has been uniquely adapted to meet the needs of the modern massage client.

Thai massage combines the best of yoga and massage. Rooted in ancient Ayurvedic tradition, it is oriented toward balancing the physical, emotional, and energetic bodies. The therapy promotes strength and flexibility, improves circulation, and boosts metabolism and immunity while inducing a deeper level of relaxation.

Swedish

Swedish massage is the most popular type of massage therapy. It promotes general relaxation of the body and mind, and overall health maintenance. Swedish massage combines techniques like gliding, kneading, and cross-fiber friction to ease tension and pain, lengthen muscles, and dissipate knots. It reduces mental stress and anxiety, enhances circulation, increases range of motion, and restores a positive emotional outlook.

Sports

Sports massage was developed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training. It emphasizes injury prevention and healing of muscles and tendons. However, it's also for people with chronic pain or restricted range of motion.

Sports massage is a good choice if you have a specific problem: a tender knee, a pulled hamstring, or a frozen shoulder, for instance. Typically, the therapist will focus on the specific problem area, rather than perform a full-body massage.

Deep Tissue

Deep tissue massage is aimed at the deeper structures of the body. It uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish massage, but strokes are generally slower and performed with more pressure.

It's a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension and adhesions.  Deep tissue work shouldn't be painful, but it tends to be more intense than a classic Swedish massage. During the session, clients are always encouraged to communicate their preference for pressure in various areas.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release focuses not only on muscles, but the fascia (or tough connective tissue) which innervates all layers of the body. With time fascia can become warped due to overuse, age, injury, or surgery. Since fascia receives little circulation, it doesn't often heal correctly or "fix itself."

MFR techniques lengthen or "unwind" fascia to restore symmetry to the body. This results in increased comfort, postures, range of motion, and functioning of muscle groups. MFR is popular with athletes, clients with chronic pain, and clients recovering from injury or surgery.

Prenatal

Prenatal massage (also known as pregnancy massage) promotes relaxation, soothes nerves, and relieves strained back and leg muscles in expectant mothers.

Prenatal massage is especially beneficial in the second and third trimesters, when increasing weight in the belly puts a strain on the back. Extra care is taken to make sure clients have the cushioning and support they need to be comfortable.

Bolsters are placed beneath the legs and shoulders, or the client may recline in a side-lying position with pillows to cushion the knees and support the arms.

Hot Stone (Half Set)

ADD THIS SERVICE TO ANY THERAPY

A 1/2 Hot Stone Service utilizes half the stones in a full stone massage to provide heated therapy to the back, shoulders, and neck.

During a hot stone massage, therapists use smooth, heated stones as an extension of their own hands as they massage, and place warm stones on specific areas of the body that are especially tight or sore.

*Hot stone massage is not appropriate if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or take prescription blood-thinners. Clients should avoid this therapy if pregnant, menopausal, or recently sunburned.

Hot Stone (Full Set)

During a hot stone massage, therapists use smooth, heated stones as an extension of their own hands as they massage, and place warm stones on specific areas of the body that are especially tight or sore. The sensation of heated stones is very relaxing and warms tight muscles so that a therapist may incorporate deeper massage more quickly.

*Hot stone massage is not appropriate if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or take prescription blood-thinners. Clients should avoid this therapy if pregnant, menopausal, or recently sunburned.

Reflexology

BOOK THIS SERVICE ALONE OR ADD IT TO ANOTHER THERAPY!

In reflexology, a therapist uses various techniques including holds, pressure, kneading, rotation, and rubbing in relation to reflex points of the feet. These reflex points refer to specific organs and glands in the body, and stimulating them promotes health in the corresponding areas via energetic pathways, or meridians.

Reflexology is a deeply relaxing treatment with benefits that can be felt throughout the body. It can be a good treatment choice for clients who are pressed for time, or who wish to remain clothed during a massage.

Migraine, Sinus, and TMJD Relief

Migraine: Stress-triggered migraines and other types of headaches can be relieved through reduced muscle tension in the back of the head, neck, and shoulders. Massage also improves circulation, a key component to reducing the pain and frequency of migraines and headaches.

Sinus: In sinus relief massage, acupressure and massage techniques to promote drainage are used to reduce sinus pressure and pain, clear the nasal passages, and facilitate respiration.

TMJD: Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJD) often results in clicking of the jaw, headaches, pain in the jaw, and/or ear pain. Common causes of TMJD pain include grinding and clenching of the teeth, high levels of stress, and jaw misalignment. In TMJD massage, a combination of specific massage techniques, cupping, and trigger point therapy release the tense muscles of the jaw and neck, reduce chronic pain and headaches, and increase joint mobility.

Perioperative + Sports Injury

In perioperative and sports injury massage, a verbal intake is taken over the phone at the time of scheduling to determine the appropriate therapist and modalities required. The length of the appointment can be influenced by a number of factors and is based on the specific needs of the client.

The therapist uses an array of techniques to support healing through all stages of injury and/or surgery, including pre-op and post-op. Multiple modalities are typically combined to relieve pain, decrease swelling, minimize scarring, restore mobility, and reduce anxiety. A doctor's approval for massage maybe required.

Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is based in the science of universal life force energy, which flows through us and causes us to be alive. When one’s life force energy is low, stress prevails leading to sickness and imbalance. When life force energy is high, we heal, strengthen and harmonize. Reiki is a simple, natural, and safe method of healing.

WHAT TO EXPECT: The client relaxes fully-clothed on a massage table while the practitioner gently places their hands on or over the body. There is a series of hand positions with very little pressure applied, making it ideal for treating all ages and conditions. Energy flows where it is needed and can be described as a warm glowing sensation. Receiving a Reiki treatment is a very soothing and clarifying experience which leaves one feeling refreshed and balanced.

CranioSacral Therapy (CST)

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on approach that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. Using a soft touch no greater than 5 grams, practitioners release restrictions in the soft tissues that surround the central nervous system. CST is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction, as well as for the prevention of disease. It's also a good choice for clients who are extremely mentally or emotionally stressed.

Clients are fully clothed during this service. Potential side effects following an initial CST appointment can include lightheadedness, dizziness, heavy sensation in the head, or mild nausea. While uncommon, this is also a great sign of change happening in the body.

Oncology

Oncology massage is the modification of existing massage therapy techniques in order to safely work with complications of cancer and cancer treatment.  Anyone who has ever received cancer treatment (from those in active treatment to those in recovery or survivorship, as well as those at the end of life) are best served by a massage therapist who has received training in oncology massage. If a client is recently diagnosed, in treatment, or as only recently been in remission, a doctor's approval for massage may be required.

Lymphatic Drainage

The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that rid the body of toxins, waste, and other unwanted materials. Accumulated toxins and waste in the body cause low energy levels, mood swings, and fatigue.

Originating in Germany, lymphatic drainage or “detox” massage encourages the lymphatic system to drain naturally. Lymph flows slowly, so a therapist uses gentle, rhythmic strokes and soft pumping movements in the direction of lymph nodes to facilitate the lymph flow. Overall, this technique supports the body’s internal filtration and immune system. The technique is also very helpful for post-surgical clients experiencing swelling in the area of surgery.

Please note this service is intended for generally healthy individuals; therapists are not certified to treat clients with lymphedema.

Coconut Hair Oil Treatment
ADD TO ANY MASSAGE

$24.00

Our coconut oil hair treatment is perfect for clients who love a relaxing scalp massage. In this treatment, a blend of warm coconut oil and essential oil is massaged into the scalp and worked through the length of the hair from root to tip. The oil blend is left to absorb fully into the scalp and hair (ideally, overnight).

This 15-minute treatment is a natural way to help hair grow longer and thicker thanks to the essential fatty acids in coconut oil that nourish the scalp and remove buildup from follicles. It also locks in color treatments for those who dye their hair and mends dry, damaged strands and split ends.

Cold Stone
ADD TO ANY MASSAGE

$12.50

Cold stone therapy begins with a massage of medium to firm pressure. The therapist focuses on warming up muscle tissue, loosening adhesions and encouraging blood flow to specific areas. Smooth cool marble stones of varying sizes are then utilized as an extension of the therapist's hands, providing contrast therapy to areas of tension and pain. They are also placed and left to cool "stubborn" spots. When the stones are removed, the tissues warm again as circulation returns to the surface, helping to flush the areas of tension. The client feels invigorated, refreshed, and tension-free.

Cold stone therapy aids in circulation and reduces acute inflammation, making it great for chronic muscle tension and athletic recovery. It relieves migraines and tension headaches, sinus congestion, and menstrual discomfort.

Cupping
ADD TO ANY MASSAGE

$5.00

Cupping is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist places soft, silicone cups on the skin to create suction. This suction pulls blood through the area, helping to reduce pain, soreness, and inflammation.

Cupping is a great tool for addressing chronic muscle tightness that doesn't release easily with traditional techniques and is especially effective for structures with a lower blood supply, such as the IT bands.
